At Hidden Pond Labradors, we place a large emphasis on the AKC breed standard, ensuring that our dogs come from upstanding championship bloodlines and are certified by the American Kennel Club.
The AKC Breed Standard is essentially a set of criteria for a dog to be considered of the highest breed quality possible.
In brief the, the criteria include, but is not limited to:
General Appearance
The AKC breed standard for Labrador retrievers describes a dog that has a strong, athletic build, allowing the dog to be utilized in a hunt, win as a show dog, or act as a family companion.
While you don’t have to intend for this purpose, the idea here is that the dog could be able to retrieve, as its name demands.
Coat & Coat Color
The AKC calls for a coat that is dense and straight, so that anyone who brushes it can feel the its hardness. Its undercoat, meanwhile, should have weather-resistant characteristics, so the dog can withstand water damage. With coat color, the AKC recognizes black, yellow, and chocolate. Anything other than those three colors, such as silver, champagne, and charcoal, is disqualified. White spots are not necessarily encouraged but are permissible.
Temperament
The AKC certifies dogs of sounds temperament; eager to please, kind and intelligent. Ideally, a Labrador retriever will be non-aggressive towards people or other animals, but instead very friendly to whoever they meet. The AKC also evaluates the build of every dog looking for sound structure, proportionate sizes and substance, and several other distinguishing features of the breed.
